Graphic shows 2.4GHz channelization. Any radios operating here need to cope with today's omnipresent WiFi, and cordless phones. Some cordless do freq. hopping, some don't. The hoppers are thus occasional interferers, on the order of a few times a second.

Top: North America 802.11/WiFi frequencies and channel numbers. 20MHz
WiFi signals (3 non-overlapping channels)

Middle: Same, but for the channels available in Europe

Bottom: 802.15.4/ZigBee channel numbers. These are 2MHz channels.

Remember that 802.15.4 defines how to communicate on 2.4GHz using MAC addresses. ZigBee is the optional network routing layer. One can do fine without ZigBee if you need no mesh-relays and if the software for each node knows the MAC addresses of the nodes with which it needs to communicate. Eliminating ZigBee when not needed is a simplification.
