In the time it took you to register and post this thread, you could have put the battery on a charger, maybe even had it get fully charged, and used it for the first time.

Depends on what you hook it up to. And how many amps*hours it needs to perform it's function. Self discharge of lipo's isn't that bad, but you never know how long it was on the shelve.

When you buy a new laptop and Windows or whatever OS needs to install/prepare itself for first use it is generally advised to keep the powersupply connected to it as a precaution. You don't want it to fail before it is done. Same applies here.
