EM-406A GPS hookup

Question: I hooked up the em406 to a pic and only connected the voltages, grn and the tx wire. I read that it would send messages w/o any aditional configuration. But I'm not receiving anything. Do I need to send it a message or do anything with the RX pin?

Did you set the baud rate correctly at the beginning ?
