Does anyone know where I can get small, thin RFID tags that the ID-20 can read? I've seen the 125kHz coin & label type tags around, but only on wholesale sites for distributors.

I have found that Trossen Robotics sells some tags that are compatible.
Specifically, I have found the:

to be compatible with my ID-20

These use the EM4102 protocol on125KHz, which (from what I've read) is the newer protocol to replace the EM4001. They seem to be backwards compatible.

The blue key fob has a range of about 3 inches on my desk... obviously your environment will differ.
