Discussions on the software and hardware for Atmel's STK standard.

Hello,

I'm trying to learn avr programming and so on and I've had trouble connecting my Olimex ISP500 programmer to AVR studio.

I followed the instructions for installing the Olimex programmer and AVR studio but I can't seem to get the two to communicate. In AVR Studio I click on CON and choose "skt500 or avrisp" and "auto" for the port selection or com3 as it's set and it just comes back saying to select a device from the devise list.

Q1 Does a micro have to be connected to the programmer for the next dialog window to come up?
(Then maybe there's something wrong with the hardware, I have tried connecting with and without the two boards plugged in and powered up in that order.)

Q2 If not what might be going wrong between the programmer and AVR Studio?

I'm on a notebook with Vista Home Premium and I was successful in updating the programmer firmware so I at least know that the programmer's connecting to the computer properly. The virtual port says that it's there and connected. Maybe someone can help me get moving?

Thanks

Dylan
