Getting odd characters with serial LCD

I am trying to use a 2 by 16 serial input LCD with an Atmel Mega8 being tested on a STK500 board. I am using Bascom AVR for the programming, so outputing to the UART should be a simple PRINT command. If I connect a terminal program (Hyper Terminal) to the transmit pin, all the text shows fine. But when connected to the LCD, all test is proceeded and follewed by two odd (chinese?) characters. Any ideas?

Make sure the LCD and Mega8 are talking at the same speed?
