Something with scintillation material and silicon photomultipliers would be cool.
Geiger counters only count pulses, they can't identify isotopes. Scintillators count the pulse energy and can identify isotopes.
With modern silicon photomultipliers, it's even possible to build a gamma ray scintillator into a watch.
