I can help you with designing a PCB. Send me an email, trevor@rossrobotics.com

The issue I have with SMD is that they need to be attached to the PCB by reflow soldering. I have some experience soldering through hole and can do that well enough I think. But I have no idea how to reflow (or wave) solder and as far as I know, its not something I can do at my home soldering station. (I use a Tenma digital soldering station, 21-10115).

The pads on the device footprint are actually big enough that you should be able to hand solder them without too much trouble. Many people shy away from SMT, and I used to as well. Then I took the plunge and now do most everything I can in SMT. Like learning soldering through-hole it takes practice, but it really is not that much harder.

Thanks everyone. I'll take Dave's (EEVblog) advice and "Don't be afraid of SMD". The problem was that I had never considered SMT hand solderable. I think I'll actually rework my PCB to use 0805 SMT components, since it'll simply the board design (and size) quite a bit.
