Cheap WiFi solution based on ESP8266 and ATmega328

Hi,
I recently got to play a bit with an ESP8266, and I think it's a great little device, and goes great with an arduino.
If you'd take a < $4 ESP8266 and slap it on a board with a < $2 Arduino Pro Mini clone... that would be the killer combo at the right price; enough to spark the fun of WiFi enabled gadgets for the masses.
We're hurting for a cost-effective WiFi solution - I resorted to using a full-blown Raspberry Pi Model A + USB WiFi for a simple light / rain / temp / humidity sensor solution because that was simply the cheapest option available.
Thanks!
