At a company I used to work, we had a process in place to create custom part numbers for the items we kept in stock to build the products. That way, if a customer need to replace a broken jack, or push button, etc, it was a simple matter.

I'm looking for an SMD 1/8" audio jack like the one on the Si4703 eval board, that's what brought this to mind.

I would think it was because they would loose money to start selling these components. They couldn't compete with distributors that can sell these for pennies on the dollar.
