how about a breakout board using the SL811HS?

this chip is easy to implement, has a 8-bit data bus which would make it easy to use with some smaller products.
the board would also provide a 5V 500mA power source for the usb host. maybe something like the TI TPS61027.

this way you could provide a single 3.3v power source for both the host controller and the usb interface.
