Open-Source Thermostat?

After reading about Google buying Nest, I was wondering if there's any group working on a simple, OSHW thermostat. I've seen one that used an Android phone mounted to the wall, but that's overkill and too expensive for me. An Arduino (pro mini?) with wifi connectivity would be ideal, maybe a little 44780 LCD and a few buttons. It would help to have a somewhat 'normal' enclosure as well, to keep the wives from getting antsy.
