Lantronix just announce the xPico and xPico WiFi modules. The WiFi module can emulate a WiFi "access point" ( AP ) which implies it can be used to connect embedded devices to tablet PCs and SmartPhones. ( they assert this also in the product description ) The module is not presently available ( August 2013 ) but will be soon... it looks very promising for several project I have in mind, but it has one serious drawback for tinkerers and experimenters... it employs a SMT connector that is absolutely tiny... much too small for ordinary hand assembly. A suitable PCB that provides the mating connector and breaks the ( 40 ) pins out to a new connector that is more convenient for experimenters would make these devices useful for people who want to employ them in personal projects.
