how about a small shield that has a tiny readout to give a R value after you lay a R into a small cradle ?
saves all that squinting at color codes .its an archaic system

How about something like this: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9141 with a small wood block to hold two bend paper clips to form your cradle?
