wow, nice find. It's priced less than the HMC1051/1052 combo and quite a bit smaller. I'll have to grab one to play around with.

QFN isn't that hard to solder, provided you have some hot air or other indirect heat source around.

In the June issue of Circuit Cellar, Jeff Bachiochi described a breakout for the HMC5843 and added an ADXL303 accelerometer so that one could take tilt into account. He also added a PIC18F uP, which would not be my choice (AVR, anyone?). Jeff does not offer the board design files.

Although you can buy the prepackaged HMC6343, which has all of the above for $175, I strongly encourage SFE to provide such a board. It would be great for roll-your-own compass experiments, which could include calibration routines for special environments (like a robot platform).
