Making multicell LiPo batteries out of individual cells

Post by 52midnight » Fri Jun 30, 2017 9:59 pm

I take things slowly since electronics as a craft is a very detailed process. I've just bought my first brushless outrunner motor and four LiPo cells to power it (GIF ICR18650 3.7V 12000mAh)

I'd like to make two 2S batteries for use in the field (one charging, the other flying).

The question here is how to connect two LiPo cells in series in a rugged high-current application. A simple mechanical contact in a flying model is obviously inadequate, so I assume from what I've seen online that a length of thick (multi-strand?) wire should be soldered between two cells, and from the end terminals to a Deans plug or something similar.

However, lithium cells are potentially dangerous. Soldering requires heating the contact ends. Electrical spot welding is probably used commercially, but is impractical for hobbyists.

Can anyone report their experience in making multicell LiPo batteries out of individual cells?

Best to buy them, as they come equipped with a charge balancing connection. You will need a balancing charger as well.

I have had nothing but positive experiences with all-battery.com

Ah! Thanks, but I already have loose cells, I'm building my own charger, will include individual cell connections for charge balancing, and am STILL interested in the original question.
