Getting started with Lattice iCE40

Hi fellows,
I'm about to start with FPGA. So I wonder if OpenOCD would be suiteable for Lattice FPGAs or only for some ALTERAs.
I'd like to keep things simple at the beginning, but I've read that Altera makes things complicated, soon. That's why I would like to start with Lattice.
Any suggestions?
