Would appreciated some suggestions - Newbie project!

Hi all, I have zero knowledge of electronic so thought the sparkfun forum would be a great place to start!
Im converting my campervan at the moment, working with compact space whilst keeping things minimalistic is the plan!
One of my ideas is to have LED's light up part of the work surface when I place my phone on it, so my thoughts are...
It needs to be pressure sensitive, then trigger the 12v LED's to come on.
Any suggestions on where to start would be greatly appreciated!
