help with ESP8266 Thing Hookup Guide

Someone built some fantastic code https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/es ... web-server. However it would be more usable if it did not host its own hotspot and connected to my wif. Can anyone help wit this? it would be even better if i could control it with my google home however i do not think that is possible. i have a bunch of 12v led strips connected to mosfets and i use this to dim them.
