Which Proximity Sensor?

Hi all.
Complete novice here seeking some advice on which proximity sensor to go for. I want the sensor to be able to work in incredibly loud environments with alternating lighting conditions, so am unsure if ultrasonic sensors or IR would cope. I've thought that a theremin style approach would work, so capacitive is my leaning. However, it needs to be a cardioid detection pattern with a minimum detection range of approx 15cm. If anyone can offer some advice on which capacitive sensor to go for or indeed whether other sensor types would actually be better, I'd be most appreciative.
