My only experience with microprocessors is using a BS2 to (1) drive a Bobot and (2) using a BS2 to make one of those boxes with several switches (mine has eight) that... if you turn a switch 'on', an arm comes up and turns it off. You can see it at the link below:

My next project is as follows: I recently purchased and installed a "Guardline GL2000" security system. When a (wireless) sensor detects motion, the receiver has the option to enable a 12VDC 300ma circuit. I would like to send a text msg to my phone when ever that happens using that signal as a trigger. It looks to me the "SparkFun ESP8266 Thing" might just be what I am looking for. But I gotta admit, most of the stuff I have read just confuses me. So my first question is (assuming the "SparkFun ESP8266 Thing" will do what I want... What do I need to order other than that unit?
