Hi,

I just followed instructions of setting up a LCD to an Arduino and I noticed that there are four additional pins (7-10) to the display that go to nothing.

What are these for and when are they used?

There are two methods of sending data to an LCD display that uses the HD44780 controller, 8 bit and 4 bit. The four bit method does not use the low order data bus lines. http://www.iharis.com/html/lcd_display_hd44780.html
