Midi sheild - fortyseven -- is it me or the cable ?

Hi
Have midi shield on Arduino Uno ( Udoo x86 ).
Anyway, the shield lights up when I hit the reset button and resets Arduino ( shield came assembled ) and program restarts ( have led blinking on setup function ).
Using Basic IO example (forty-seven midi library ) can't get the led to light up. Tried other examples no Midi signal - Tried serial examples no signal in.
Tried making channel on device 1 and 10 and Midi.begin (1) and 10 and OMNI. NOTHING !
Cant get MIDI signal in. Any ideas ? I'm down to maybe the Midi cable
