Purchased SN74HC595 8-bit shift register, received SN74HC165N instead. Can I use it the same way?

As the title states, I purchased SN74HC595 (from a chinese e-tailer, also sold on this site though) 8-bit shift registers, but received SN74HC165N registers instead. Can I still follow a tutorial that uses the SN74HC595, and use the SN74HC165N exactly the same, or are there differences in use?

Thanks,

junkmonk

Nope.... the 74HC595 is serial IN/ parallel OUT, the 74HC165 is parallel IN/ serial OUT.. so completely the opposite...
