Hi,

By looking at my tracking, I'm unsure whether the package has left the US, or is still sitting in San Francisco

I had wrongly assumed that USPS would be quicker, since it was the most expensive option...
is this holdup normal for express mail?

I took a look at some of our shipment tracking using Express Mail, and your shipment is most likely in transit. It normally is in transit about 5 days (but that can vary). It should be logged in when it arrives in Ireland.

It will probably sit in customs another day or two, and then should go out for local delivery.

USPS Express mail is more expensive than first class, though it's usually faster. It is much cheaper than UPS or Fedex, which also offer tracking.

First Class can take up to 6 weeks, though it is normally much faster, and as SparkFun says in their conditions, First Class shipping is not guaranteed. We have lost a couple shipments First Class over the years, never lost an Express Mail package.

Hi, just to follow up, the package did arrive on Monday morning, a week after dispatch, and thankfully didn't get sniped by customs ;) now I'm happily building my project, sorry about the panic, all is well!
