Questions relating to designing PCBs

I'm working on a circuit that has used an optocoupler to drive an alternistor(triac).

The circuit is below:

My question is about R1, and the type of resistor / power rating.

I read in an appnote (http://en.littelfuse.cn/data/en/Applica ... AN1007.pdf) that because of the way triacs work, the pulse through the resistor is fairly minimal, and it said a 1/4W resistor would work. Can I use a surface mount resistor? If so, can I just use a 1/4W(or greater) thick film resistor?

This is my first time designing a PCB that I actually plan on sending to be made and populating, so I'm really excited, but this is the only thing holding me back (and then the routing of course).

Thanks much!
