As I understand Sparkfun uses EAGLE for pcb design? What soft is used for schematics and simulation?
There seems to be no single good all purpose tool.

Eagle is used for schematics aswell.

Simulation is not always used or needed during the design process. If used at all, it is typically to test behavior of analog sections before prototyping. Full designs are pretty much never simulated. The vast majority of ICs available have no simulation models available, so simulation would only be useful for circuits involving discrete semiconductors, op-amps, etc.

If you're interested in simulation, LTSpice is free from Linear Technology. I use it regularly.

Its very encouraging to read this. At first when I started with electronics I attempted to simulate the whole schema. The more I start to understand general principles the less I want to simulate.
