Are those circular bits in the picture going to make contact with the surface of the PCB? Is it ok to have traces (with solder mask) running underneath those circular bits?

this is a product on sparkfun, the datasheet is available, and the footprint is available in the sparkfun library. But the datasheet does not mention the circular areas I'm talking about.

are these going to cause problems if traces are underneath

It depends on whether they will contact the PCB or not. The solder mask should insulate them.

You should be able to tell from the data sheet. If not you will need to check an actual part.

the problem is that the datasheet does not say anything about those areas
