Getting started - IC suggestions

Post by womble » Tue Sep 10, 2013 10:11 am

Hi, I'm new to USB development and looking for some suggetsions on an IC to use. It seems the FTDI chips are popular and cheap, but there are quite a few different flavors.

Basically I'm just looking to send serial data to an existing circuit over USB (previously I used the parallel port, but they are becoming less common). I don't need anything particularly intelligent (such as the ability to upload firmware to the chip). Just something that will act as a USB device and allow me to send a series of bits to my existing circuit.

The FT232 look like what I'm after, or perhaps the FT230, FT231 or FT234. The latter three are full speed rather than high speed (which is fine for my needs - they are also quite a bit cheaper), other than that I don't see much difference. Any recommendations please?
