Tips and questions relating to the GPS modules from SFE

Hi all,

Is there any GPS modules out there that allow user code to be added?
I've created a few GPS logger designs and its seems such a waste to have a secondary micro just to handle a few code snippits when there is a fully functioning ARM7 inside the GPS module.

New chip from Atmel (ATR0663) has a full GPS module integrated on-chip.
Is there anything other programmable GPS modules?

Thanks,

Mark.

Sparkfun sells some cellular+GPS modules with an embedded Python interpreter ... of course, then you're wasting all that cellular RF circuitry :P

Hello, I assume you're the same guy who posted on the LPC2000 group. The short answer that it's very difficult. GPS chipset manufacturers are governed by quite strict technology export rules that limit the performance of the gps (height, speed, acceleration) so that they can't be used by dodgy characters in home-made missiles, for example. So they're not too keen giving to access to the guts of the chipset. However, reflashing is possible, but varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and I'm not sure how keen they'd be to help you out if you're not a large (and therefore perhaps more 'safe') company. Good luck!
