Tips and questions relating to the GPS modules from SFE

I'm having trouble parsing the negative altitudes that my Trimble module is generating. Does anyone know the format for negative altitudes? Can someone post an NMEA string as an example? It's a long drive for me to be able to check it directly, and I'm getting reports that things aren't working well for people living near the coast or other low areas.

I've also looked for some NMEA simulators, but the one I got working didn't accept negative altitudes as an input. Can anyone point me to an inexpensive (free?) software NMEA generator?

In case you haven't found one yet, I just ran across this one:

The installer is in german but the program's interface is in english. It seems to support negative altitudes.
