Tips and questions relating to the GPS modules from SFE

Hi. I have purchased a Lassen Datalogger that has not been delivered yet (it is only 3 days).
The question is, I have seen some mesaages about it not performing as it should.
Since the messages are quite old, I expect those problems to have been solved by now.
Can some of you, owners and users of the datalloger, comment on your experiences and your opinion on the quality and usefulness of it ?
I would really appreciate you input.

Regards

The hardware is good but you should consider the firmware as nice tutorial to help you start your actual application fast. To have a bit flexibility, get the LPC bootloader interface and Rowley CrossStudio trial. Also, Lassen evaluation board is a must for turning NMEA messages on/off (you CAN access the second Lassen IQ port if you are good with thin wire and have TTL/RS232 converter at hand :P).

Hi NCG:
Thanks for your reply. I would like to understand your reply. Does this mean that I have to play around with the firmware ?
I am completely iliterate when it comes to programing. Doesn't the kit come with its own firmware ? What does it do ?

Overal SFE did a great job on getting the datalogger to market quickly and with reasonable functionality. Things like enclosures, batteries, additinal nmea sentences and power saving modes were things that were not really addressed. I had a need for these things and put together my own logger. There has been enough interest that I am selling these as well. Checkout the website if you are interested.

I have to stress, that the SFE loggers hardware and firmware is perfect for basic logging and works well, but if any flexibility is needed (file timestamps, how often and what to log, in what format to log), you have to modify the firmware source yourself. I dont know, if Ohararp gives out the source code for his products. Ohararp's logger is definitely further developed product (software, power supply, case, more sensitive GPS module to name just some aspects). That does not make the SFE logger less valuable - it is more targeted to DIY. If ready made system is needed, then Oharap's version is more attractive. You might also want to keep an eye on the microSD logger currently in development by Ohararp.

NCG, Thanks for all the nice comments. Again, SFE is awesome and I use a lot of their products in my designs. Many of the parts I use can also be purchased from SFE as well. You can't beat some of their dev products to try out new features and designs.
