Using FTDI D2XX drivers with a GPS on OS X?

I am trying to interact with a FTDI232R-based GPS device under OS X, and having problems with the serial virtual com port drivers, and am interested in the D2XX driver in that application.
I am finding a lack of information on this combination on the web. Also, most of my existing GPS applications are designed to work with serial port emulation. Has anybody used the D2XX drivers in this situation, and what was your experience with them. Can they play well with the serial port drivers, installed on the same machine. If so, how is that done?
I'm also curious about people's experiences on linux and windows.
I am currently asking so I can use it with a GPS, but they look pretty interesting also as general purpose interfaces..
