In an effort to get better performance out of a chip antenna (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... ts_id=9131) with the Venus 634FLPx, I'm planning to use the SMA661AS GPS amplifier. Would this actually increase the performance of the antenna? Are there any issues with doing this?

There isn't really any issues with this. I started with the passive antenna and it was taking 20-30 mins to get a lock. I put a different LNA on, but not the TTFF on a cold boot just powering it on is about 2 mins. The active GPS antennas are basically an antenna with a LNA right after it.
