Tips and questions relating to the GPS modules from SFE

Hi,

Pardon if this is a silly question.

Are the fast update rate GPS receivers, that is 5 or 10Hz, only workable in America with some sort of augmentation like WAAS.

If I'm in Australia, can I get one of the newer modules like the Venus to give me a 10Hz speed reading, or without some sort of augmentation am I limited to 1Hz? I'm looking to instrument a boat and want to measure the surge spike from paddlers/rowers.

Thanks for any responses.

It will work anywhere that you can get a GPS lock, so yes, anywhere :d

You should be able to see the surges with a good enough lock, you could also datalog a single axis of an accelerometer as well, then combine results?
