Tips and questions relating to the GPS modules from SFE

I saw something similar to my question, so forgive me if this seems like a re-post. And just FYI, I'm not tech-savvy. So keep the answers 2-year-old simple. :)

I'm trying to build something short of a Lojack system. I don't need the cell phone/e-mail alerts or anything like that.

All I want is a GPS in my car, so if somehow it is to get stolen, I can locate it by finding the signal from the car. (Make sense?) I always hear about how cell phones with built-in GPS are like beacons - how can I take that concept and use it for my car? (Cheaply?)

I was wondering what I would need for that? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Try this:

It's slightly power-hungry for handheld ops, but should work fine on a car battery. It has GSM GPRS built-in, give it SIM card and your car can dial or email you the location. I don't think the one Sparkfun sells has Python script built-in, so if you don't want to add a controller or go deep into programming, find the -PY version.

In the style of 2007 lingo, perhaps?

So how do you get data from your car, while it is
missing (stolen)?

I don't know of any solution not requiring that
your car send data out, over the air, using radio
(or cell or satellite) comms.

You could use a commercial service such as Lo-Jack.

There are services that can locate cell phones with GPS, like this one:

You could use one of those, with the phone in a secure location in the car.

The GM862 would be better for the OP, unless he wants to solder BGA :D
