GM862-GPS hyperterminal connection

I am currently having trouble connecting my GM862-GPS RS232 eval board to hyperterminal. It was working fine before but now it's returning junk.
When i type a command such as "atd" it is executed correctly but what appears on the terminal is not what i type.
I am using the following configuration 9600 8-N-1

Likely a bad serial cable.....

Isn't the default baud rate 115200,8,n,1?

I tried different baud rates. None of them worked
