How can the search box be cleared

Every time I visit the SparkFun website, the search box 'helpfully' fills in a search that I did years ago in case I am still looking for that item. More recent searches are not saved, just this old search. Note that this happens even before I log in so the web site itself does not yet acknowledge that it knows who I am, but that old search is already there.
