I know building some custom cars that I used to use a VDO speed sensor which is a hall effect sensor. Has anyone ever figured out exactly what type of pulses these sensors output? I have a project that I need to be able to read the pulses and have scoured the internet for information regarding the output of the sensors.

From what it looks like the typical pulse per mile is around 2-8k most at 4k pulses per mile. But I have no idea how to read the pulses? What voltage or current capable device would I use to read these pulses so that I can bring them in to a PIC? I would need to program the pic to do a calibration sequence as I need to know a given distance a car has traveled. This distance will be more like 500 feet not 500 miles so a GPS solution is not what I am looking for plus the cost of such a solution would make this product to pricey.

Has anyone ever done anything with these that can give me any direction?
