Fine fiber optics or other thin light up strands?

Hi - I'm working on a project which will need very lightweight and thin (thinner than EL wire) strands that will light up - I'm thinking either fiber optic strands that I can put a controllable LED or OLED at the end or something? Anyone have any ideas where I can find materials to experiment with?

Sometimes you can find toy/flashlight things with very low quality fiber on them They shouldn't be more than a few bucks and would probably have most of what you would need.
