The mosfets on BOB-12009 has a switch-on threshold (Vgs)of around 1.3 volt for the average majority of units, worst case population has a maximum of 1.5 volt. You might get lucky that it will have lower thresholds and it works. But don't count on it. In fact, assume it fails. So yes, you have to.

Any basic transistor for that linked circuit should work though. NPN-transistors have a switch-on 'threshold' voltage around 0.6 volt. Those will react to the H and V sync signals.
