Myoware powershield

Hi - tried the power-shield out today and have some questions.
The batteries in the shield became hot after about 10 minutes - is this normal (I also had 5v coming into the myoware muscle sensor via arduino - should you still include arduino power with the power shield - or is this what is causing the excess heat ?).
Will the powershield minimise noise on my readings - if so to what extent ?
Is it necessary to connect the raw/shd/gnd side of the powershield and the muscle sensor or is it sufficient to only connect the sig/+/- sides ?
Any advice would be great
