I'm confused about the interface. The docs seem to indicate it's a serial interface, but the inclusion of the USB cable and mention of the FTDI driver leads me to think otherwise. If it is truly USB, does that mean I have to be a USB master to talk to it?

A USB cable with FTDI serial adapter creates a serial port on a PC or Mac, with which you can communicate via TTL serial with a uP or the modem.
You do not need either when using a uP to communicate directly with the modem.
