LCD-10097 contrast issue

I get uneven contrast on my LCD-10097.
I have wired up my LCD-10097 and downloaded the example code. The device works fine except that I have uneven contrast that make either the left half too bright or the right half too dim. There is also a bright line in the 3rd and 4th blocks from the right, top and bottom.
I suspect a wiring or soldering problem but have no idea where to begin to trouble shoot. Any suggestions?
