Question on El Escudo Dos use of Zero CrossingTriacs

The El Escudo Dos uses an optical isolated zero crossing triac to isolate the Arduino data pin from the AC circuitry. The isolated data pin is then used to drive a sensitive triac which switches the EL wire.
In my understanding of EL wire, you want to switch the AC from the EL inverter on or off at zero crossing to minimize all kind of problems.
The El Escudo Dos advertises itself as using zero crossing triacs, but I don't understand their purpose on the board.
Can someone explain to me if i'm wrong, or explain the circuit to me
