I ordered the SparkFun Can-Bus shield and Arduino redboard, and followed the setup from here:

Only the Arduino, shield, and OBD2 cable (no GPS, LCD, etc.)
I ran a few test programs, Arduino works fine, but if I try the CAN demo it says it "Can't Init CAN".
The red LED lights up on the shield.
The guide says it should power up from the car port, but unless it's plugged into the USB on the laptop, it doesn't turn on.
Could it be something wrong with the car OBD port? (2014 Subaru Outback). Or the setup? Or my soldering?
I didn't change anything, any jumpers, just used the default setup.
I'd appreciate any help.
