Like thousands of other people I am thinking hard about making myself a generic USB game controller based on a stationary bike. Probably going to try using my actual MTB plus a trainer stand, unless the VirZoom thing becomes platform-independent instead of "Welded to WinDoze". DIY might even be more fun! Anyway, in sketching out an Arduino-based USB game bike I am dithering over the brake levers. Everything else seems pretty straightforward.

It seems like the easiest thing to do is make the brake lever pull on a linear encoder, which is spring-loaded to return smoothly when the lever is released. Trying to mount rotary encoders at the hinge of the brake lever seems complicated (and I don't have a 3d printer for fabbing custom parts).

Does anyone have any advice/thoughts/part recommendations?
