I am 80 years old and new to microcontrollers - without a clue where to start. I just ordered the PGM-09825 and when I looked at the site to download drivers I was overwhelmed. Can someone tell me which files to load for Windows 7 Professional? Also, is there a place to go which will explain the process of using the PGM-09825?

I will be forever grateful for any help.

For that device, go to https://github.com/sparkfun/Pocket_AVR_ ... er/Drivers and download/install either installer_x86.exe or installer_x64.exe, depending on whether you have 32 bit or 64 bit Windows 7.

There is a hookup guide for that device at https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/po ... okup-guide.

If you are a beginner, you'd probably be better off getting one of the Arduino starter kits and working through the experiments in the kit instead.

I'm inclined to agree with the Arduino approach - programmable chip is all set upwith power supply, connectors, loads of avice etc. to have a play. This is where I started (at age 66!) and this led onto programming individual microcontrollers so I can fit things into a model railway where the Arduino is too big.

I started with an Arduino, some assorted transistors, capacitors, resistors and LED's, a little electric motor, a bundle of jumpers and a couple of breadboards, an Arduino and the Arduino IDE download, the Arduino forum, a copy of "electronics for Dummies" (skip that one if you are already into electronics!) and a copy of the Arduino Cookbook.

And have learned lots and had loads of fun!

Yay! I am so glad to hear I am not the only ancient geezer just getting started with Arduino(like) projects. I've ordered my Starter Kit and am eagerly awaiting...
