This topic has been explored many times here and elsewhere, but after spending hours and hours on this I just keep hitting dead ends.

I'm on Mac El Capitan though I've also tried in Windows 7.
I'm looking to upload from the Arduino IDE to the Arduino Pro Mini 328 3.3V using the Spark Fun FTDI Basic 3.3V breakout.
As has been experienced by many, only the bluetooth port is showing in the Arduino IDE.

I have tried installing FTDI drivers as per many different threads (like this: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/ho ... rivers/all or this: http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=420202.0). Some other things I tried have involved manually copying dylib and h files and loading / unloading kext files. I've also tried similar steps on Windows 7 with no luck. I've rebooted the IDE after each attempt and rebooted the computer multiple times.

When I go to device listings either in the Mac OS or Windows device manager and look under "USB" I don't see any FTDI related or unrecognized items. I've tried different USB ports and different USB cables. From what I've read something should be appearing in this list when the device is connected so I'm beginning to suspect that it's a hardware issue and not a software issue. Is there something else I should be looking for?

When I plug the USB cable in there are two quick red and green light flashes on the FTDI basic and simultaneous flashes of the green light on the arduino and the static illumination of the red light. Moments later there's an additional flash of all 3 lights followed by a longer pause and a green flash just on the arduino. That suggests to me that it's working.. Is this all normal behaviour?

Thanks for your help.
