Used for what?
I do not have this weatherboard, so I'm not 'in the know'. Just guessing here. Since it is in that corner of the schematic related to the optional GPS connection I think it means serial GPS. And since pin 4 and 5 are not hardware UART pins I think it means software serial connection.
Top right Arduino area - what do the asterisks mean on D3, D5, D9 etc?
Pretty sure that is meant to indicate that these pins have hardware timers associated with them so they can be used to output PWM waveforms.
